Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is home to 50 First Nations communities that have lived in the region since time immemorial. These communities are diverse in their approaches to wellness, including varying blends of Western and traditional health practices, with distinct languages, traditions and ways of being.

The Vancouver Island region

The First Nations communities on Vancouver Island are grouped into three families: the Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwakwaka'wakw families.

Coast Salish communities are primarily located along the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, from the southern tip to Qualicum Beach, with Homalco and Klahoose situated farther north. Their languages encompass several dialect groups, including Northern Salish, Central Salish, Northern Straits, and Clallam. A central Coast Salish value is “Nuts'amaatstuhw kwthun syaays” (“work together as one”), reflecting the importance of relationships and interconnectedness among people, the land and all living things.

The Nuu-chah-nulth, meaning “all along the mountains and sea,” occupy territories stretching approximately 300 kilometres along the Island’s west coast. Organized into Nations and Chiefly families led by hereditary Chiefs, they live within defined ha’houlthee (traditional territories). Their worldview emphasizes the vital importance of relationships, teaching that isolation from community leads to harm, while connection fosters humility, learning and understanding of the natural and spiritual worlds.

The Kwakwaka'wakw peoples live on the northern coast of Vancouver Island and nearby mainland areas. Their languages—including Kwak’wala and related dialects—are central to identity and cultural continuity. Their principle of “’Namwayut” (“we are all one”) underscores interconnectedness among people, land and traditions, with knowledge passed through generations.
