The First Nations Health Authority is developing a Respecting Tobacco Framework to support Aboriginal people to improve health, reduce non-traditional tobacco use and increasing awareness of traditional tobacco use in communities. In honor of this work, the FNHA and the FNHDA are working together to develop a training session for community Health Directors and Health Care professionals around tobacco cessation. The First Nations Health Directors Association is assisting with the coordination of the six regional sessions that will be held during the months of February and March 2015. The six dates, regions, and locations are as follows:
February 12-13 – Vancouver Island – Nanaimo

This training session will be delivered by certified trainers from both the Centre for Collaboration, Motivation, and Innovation and in house FNHA trainers. The first day of training will focus on skill building to support brief action planning for broad based health goal setting, with a focus on tobacco cessation as an example throughout. The second day of the training is planned to include information about respecting tobacco from the perspective of an Elder or community expert, an overview of tobacco supports and resources available, and finally, an engagement session so that participants have an opportunity to provide input into FNHA’s ongoing Respecting Tobacco work.

Sharing and promoting knowledge about the Traditional and Sacred use of Tobacco will be a priority in these sessions!
Do you know any cultural leaders or Elders within your Region that may be interested in teaching about traditional tobacco use as a part of the Respecting Tobacco training sessions?
This opportunity would involve an audience of approximately 24 people, would be approximately 2 hours in length and could include a formal presentation, a hands on activity or ceremony – depending on what is most appropriate region by region. We are looking for names and contact information for individuals who can assist us in each region and we do have a small amount of funding to assist with honorarium requests.
