The Annual Gathering our Voices youth conference took place in Victoria, BC March 21-24. As the Health and Wellness partner for the event, the FNHA hosted 15 workshops to a sold out audience of First Nations Youth from across Canada. Congratulations to all the youth who attended.
Workshops included Sex Signals with FNHA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Evan Adams, Delicious Nutritious Super Market Shopping, Tobacco Timeout: PhotoVoice Project, Drop that Fry Bread, Living Well in the Digital Age, Elders Video Project, Keeping Motivated with Waylon Pahona and A Women’s Sacred Journey.
The FNHA hosted Health Screening where delegates received diabetes testing, lung assessments, oral health assessments as well as fitness planning – early numbers show almost 100 youth took advantage of the screening sessions! The FNHA also had diabetes and Dietitian education booths on site. FNHA info and health careers table were packed at all times with curious youth stopping by and contributing to our question box asking them how the FNHA can help youth create Wellness in their lives!
The FNHA also co-hosted the Tobacco Eating Machine with Aboriginal Sport BC, where youth surrendered commercial tobacco for healthy prizes and incentives. We also asked youth to sign a pledge to abstain from commercial tobacco use for the duration of the conference, in total we received 200 pledges! The FNHA is a proud to be the Health and Wellness partner of the Gathering Our Voices Conference and looks forward to future events with the youth.
