Supported by the Indigenous Peoples Day of Wellness Grant, this event brings together Nations, families and neighbours from across the island.

Each year, the Indigenous Peoples Day of Wellness (IPDoW) grants support First Nations communities in creating wellness events that honour culture, connection and the strength of community. The grants help bring communities together through activities that celebrate identity, culture, resilience and walking together to achieve a goal.

One of this year’s standout events was Run the Spit, hosted by the Liǧʷiłdaxʷ Health Society. The annual five-kilometre run/walk has grown into a vibrant community tradition.

The day began with a prayer from an Elder, grounding participants in gratitude, culture and connection. Singing and drumming from community members followed, connecting everyone to the land they are on, the ancestors who walk alongside us and the community around us.

While the run is timed for those who want to compete, participants of all ages and abilities are welcome. After a group warmup, hundreds of participants—runners, walkers, children, families with strollers and Elders—set out along the five-kilometre route.

Drawing about 300 participants each year, Run the Spit has become a gathering place for member Nations, local schools and community members across the region. After crossing the finish line, everyone is welcomed back with a pancake and ham breakfast.

More than a recreational event, Run the Spit reflects community wellness in action. Movement, cultural connection and community spirit are all at the heart of the gathering.

“Run the Spit is about more than finishing the 5km. It’s about coming together as a community, celebrating our culture, and supporting wellness in a way that feels joyful and inclusive. Every year, we see how much this event means to people, and we’re grateful for the IPDoW Grant that helps make it possible.”
