Additional information
Enabling culturally safe and humble care environments requires a commitment to understanding and demonstrating the following principles:
- Health and wellness starts with every human being. A commitment to seeking to understand what health and wellness means to each individual client in order to support their personal wellness goals and needs.
- Relationship-based care is core to a healing environment. A commitment to providing utmost attention and care to developing a mutually trusting and respectful relationship with each individual client.
- Cultural safety is defined by each individual client’s health service experience. A commitment to listening openly and honestly and allowing individuals to ask questions and raise concerns without fear of reprisal.
- Access to health care is an important determinant of health and wellness. A commitment to identifying and removing barriers to providing the highest level of possible care—the appropriate care, at the appropriate time.
- Continuous learning as a health provider is essential to providing culturally safe care. This includes a commitment to remaining open to diverse perspectives, seeking to honestly understanding concerns and leading by example.
The cultural safety and humility competencies of providers are assessed in the application process for medical staff. MAWO also supports continuing education opportunities to support medical staff at all stages of their cultural safety and humility learning journeys.
We encourage you to learn more about cultural safety and humility and read our policy statement on cultural safety and humility.
