The Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Mental Health and Wellness is transitioning to a new phase with the implementation of the 10-Year Strategy on the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). To coincide with this transition, the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) has updated its website with a SDOH webpage.
The 10-Year Strategy on the Social Determinants of Health: A Framework for the Future (the Strategy) was approved by Chiefs and leaders at Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey XII. The SDOH are strongly linked to and complement the First Nations Perspective on Health & Wellness and the Strategy will help to inform and influence system change and improvement in a good way.
There are four key areas of the Strategy which hold two short term and two long term goals. The two short term goals focus on Healing Approaches that improve trauma-informed care at all levels and rebuilding and reclaiming Cultural Infrastructure that has been damaged through colonialism.
The two long term goals will seek to further Nation-based Governance to better respond to the needs of Nations and Sustainable Funding from federal and provincial government partners so investments are longer term, flexible and support Nation-led responses.
The implementation plan is forthcoming and funding is expected to begin flowing this quarter.
