Canada's only professional development in Indigenous public health is now accepting applications.
The Indigenous Public Health (IPH) Training Program provides participants with leadership skills to address the unique public health issues in Indigenous communities. It does this by incorporating Indigenous knowledge, and is taught by Indigenous scholars, University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty members, and health leaders in public health and research fundamentals.
The program is delivered by UBC's Faculty of Medicine's Centre of Excellence in Indigenous Health.
The IPH program has four main pillars and examines public health through an Indigenous perspective. The first is engaging the unique challenges and opportunities of working in Indigenous contexts. The second is recognizing the historic and ongoing health disparities and inequities faced by Indigenous populations. The third pillar is building applied and theoretical knowledge affirming Indigenous rights to self-determination in relation to health services, research and program development. The final pillar of the program addresses multiple, intersecting Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation commission.
The program offers two courses per institute, and the institutes run in February and August. These are in-person weeklong intensive courses at the UBC campus. The program is open to community health professionals or university undergraduate and graduate students.
The two courses offered in the next institute, from Feb. 20-24, 2023, are Introduction to Indigenous Health Policy in Canada, and Collecting, Analyzing and Using Public Health Data in Indigenous Communities.
The application deadline for the next institute is Nov. 30, 2022.
