Kelowna tournament attracted 900 young First Nations ballers, the largest gathering of First Nations since pandemic began
The Syilx Nation in Kelowna is basking in the glow of hosting the Junior All Native Tournament (JANT) for young First Nations basketball players, which took place from March 20-25.
For many it was a long overdue opportunity to connect with other First Nations and take up the challenge of representing their communities over six days of competition.
The JANT games were all broadcast on Canada's First Nations Radio with avid baller Kiefer Collison calling the shots during the play-by-play. Those games are still available on replay at CFNR.
As an event sponsor, the FNHA Interior Regional Team was on hand throughout the tournament to engage with athletes, parents, Elders and community members. The FNHA Booth was a hub of energy at the event, where we shared information on programs and services as well a fun station for younger children to colour, take photos, and spin a wheel to win prizes.
Several Elders attended to share traditional medicines and smudgings as they engaged with our future leaders. The team was also able to share information about FNHA's programs, including Eating Healthy and Respecting Tobacco.

Next year, the 2023 Junior All Native Tournament will be held in Nanaimo, hosted by the Snuneymuxw Native Sons.
