The Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions has announced they have added 180 publicly funded treatment and recovery beds throughout the province of British Columbia.
Nearly 100 of these beds are already open in several communities, with the remainder to open later in the summer. The beds will provide more options for people living in rural and remote areas who now have more choice to seek treatment closer to home.
The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) has heard from communities that cost and distance has been a barrier for people to access the care they need. When someone makes the courageous decision to seek treatment, they should be able to receive care that is close to their family, community or support network.
All of these beds are fully publicly-funded and won't charge fees to people who access their services. Clients must be 19 years or older to receive services and are prioritized according to need, with a focus on underserved populations, including Indigenous people, people who are or have been involved with the criminal justice system, and new or pregnant parents.
Referrals are accepted from any source, including self-referral or with the help of a referral work, such as a doctor or counsellor. You can also receive a referral from the First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day. For referral pathways please visit the service provider websites listed below.
