Coast Salish Territory - The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) is proud to learn today of Mary Simon's appointment as Canada's new Governor General. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement at a news conference held at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec this morning.
As the 30th Governor General of Canada, the Inuk leader and former Canadian diplomat is the first Indigenous person to serve in the role, and will represent the Queen at the federal level in Canada and act as the country's head of state.
In her first speech as Governor General, Simon acknowledged that health and wellness is a priority, and that her appointment was “an historic and inspirational moment and another step forward in the long path toward reconciliation".
“This is a significant milestone event for British Columbia and Indigenous people across the country", said Richard Jock, CEO of the FNHA. “We congratulate Mary Simon on her important new role, for her long history of commitment to Canada, and as a tireless advocate for Indigenous and human rights."
