The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) is proud to celebrate Indigenous Nurses Day on April 10, recognizing the incredible contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis nurses who deliver culturally safe, inclusive, and community-rooted care to First Nations people across BC.

Indigenous nurses hold a deep and powerful role in health care. They bridge two worlds—bringing together traditional healing knowledge and Western medical practice—to support the health and wellness journeys of individuals, families, and Nations. Whether they are serving as frontline caregivers, educators, leaders, or advocates, Indigenous nurses are essential in improving health outcomes for First Nations people and communities.

This deep legacy of Indigenous nursing leadership is reflected within FNHA itself. Our organization is led by CEO Monica McAlduff, who proudly comes from a strong nursing background. FNHA's newest Chief Nursing Officer, Gary Housty, is also an Indigenous nurse. With over 23 years working as a specialized emergency room nurse in a busy Lower Mainland trauma centre, Gary joined FNHA in 2019, bringing with him a deep commitment to cultural safety, clinical excellence and Nation-based care.

“As an Indigenous nurse, it is a deep honour to celebrate Indigenous Nurses Day—both within FNHA and across BC's health system," said Gary, who is from the Haíɫzaqv First Nation in Bella Bella, BC and carries the ancestral name K̓vssm̓ixv, which means 'One Wolf,' and his shared hereditary chieftainship name Nác̓i, signifying 'treasure box containing supernatural power.' “The strength, resilience, and dedication that Indigenous nurses bring to their roles do not go unnoticed. This work is more than a profession—it is a calling, a responsibility, and a gift to the communities we serve.

The FNHA is committed to walking alongside our Indigenous nurses. Our shared work is part of a larger vision, one that uplifts Indigenous-led health care, self-determination and culturally safe practices. On this day, and every day, we raise our hands to you. We see you, we thank you, and we honour your continued dedication to supporting health and wellness for First Nations people in BC.
